One Rescued Before Vehicle Bursts Into Flames On Merritt Parkway

One person who was trapped in a vehicle following a single-vehicle crash on the Merritt Parkway was extricated by firefighters.

Another person in the vehicle was able to climb out following the Fairfield County crash around 8:30 p.m., Sunday, June 7, near Exit 42 in Westport.

​According to the Westport Fire Department,  the first arriving fire unit found the vehicle on its roof in the left lane of the highway. 

Fire personnel checked the vehicle and found a single person was trapped in the vehicle. 

Firefighters deployed a protective hose line and began to set up for extrication while others assessed the patient's condition.

Using stabilization tools and a combination of spreaders and cutters to remove the vehicle's doors, firefighters were able to remove the patient who was turned over to Westport EMS for and was turned over to Westport EMS for care. 

Once extrication was complete, the vehicle began to smoke and then burst into flames. 

Firefighters extinguished the fire, which was isolated to the engine compartment. 

The two occupants were transported to the hospital. Their condition was unknown.

Connecticut State Police are conducting the investigation. 

The highway was shut down for more than an hour while the vehicle was removed.
